Group Leader Global Health Pediatric Oncology

Do you want to make a global impact in Pediatric Oncology? Join the Princess Máxima Center as a Group Leader in Global Health Pediatric Oncology and contribute to groundbreaking research focused on improving childhood cancer care worldwide. You will collaborate with an international and diverse team, working to bridge the gap in cancer care between high- and low-income countries. Are you ready to make a difference? We look forward to meeting you.

Background
The mission of the Princess Máxima Center is to cure every child with cancer, with an optimal quality of life. This mission extends beyond children with cancer in the Netherlands, to also include those in low- and middle-income countries. The cure rate for childhood cancer in the world’s poorest countries is less than 20%, in stark contrast to the 80% cure rate for children with cancer in wealthier countries, such as the Netherlands. This disparity is unacceptable. The underlying factors contributing to this significant difference often lie within the realm of Global Health: access to care, healthcare systems, poverty, and community and government involvement. These factors also play a role in the likelihood of curing childhood cancer with an optimal quality of life in wealthier countries. For this reason, the Princess Máxima Center is seeking a Group Leader in Global Health Pediatric Oncology.

The Department and Developments

The Princess Máxima Center has recently established a new department, Máxima International. In addition to the International Patient Office, Twinning Partnerships are a core element of this new structure. These partnerships involve collaborations between the Máxima and more than 20 hospitals worldwide, organized across four regions: Europe, Eurasia, Indonesia, and Sub-Saharan Africa. Each region is led by a regional coordinator and supported by a team of professionals from diverse backgrounds. Two project leaders assist in driving activities aimed at improving care, data collection, education and training, research, and advocacy. Within Máxima International, several team members are involved in research related to pediatric oncology. The goal is to establish a new group within the Máxima Research Institute focused on Global Health Pediatric Oncology, which will extend beyond these partnerships.

Position
As a group leader, you will be responsible for establishing and conducting Global Health research activities within pediatric oncology. You will work closely with (Master’s and primarily PhD) students in the Netherlands and at twinning partner institutions abroad, supervising them in their research projects and supporting them in developing their scientific skills. Additionally, you will facilitate, when necessary, the drafting of research collaboration agreements and data-sharing agreements. You will also be (co-)responsible for securing external funding for new research projects.

You will contribute to the development of locally relevant research aimed at improving care, health equity, and quality of life for children with cancer, with a focus on sharing knowledge and expertise between the Netherlands and partner countries. Your research will focus on analyzing factors that influence healthcare outcomes, such as access to care and health insurance, social factors like poverty and stigma, healthcare structures including health economics, and other social determinants of health. You will also provide guidance on the appropriate use of scientific methods, both qualitative and quantitative, including advanced statistical techniques for data analysis and interpretation. This may involve developing questionnaires and conducting interviews.

Your role will also involve:

  • Improving health equity worldwide
  • Developing and implementing public health interventions
  • Community engagement and advocacy
  • Health system strengthening
  • Addressing health equity and health disparities
  • Global health ethics and security
  • Digital health and innovation

Qualifications

We are looking for a visionary, motivated, and experienced researcher to lead and contribute to this important initiative.

  • A minimum of 2 years postdoctoral experience in a relevant field such as medicine, epidemiology, (international/global) public health, or a related discipline.
  • Experience in clinical, epidemiological, and global health research. Affinity with implementation science is a plus.
  • Proficiency in statistical analysis (using software such as R or Python).
  • Experience in supervising PhD students and managing international collaborations is preferred.
  • Proven ability to secure external funding for research projects.
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to work effectively in international, multicultural, and multidisciplinary teams.
  • Experience in qualitative research, including conducting interviews and developing questionnaires.
  • Willingness to travel abroad and actively participate in local research initiatives.

Your gross monthly salary (FWG 70 or FWG 75) will be based on your experience and background and will include 8.33% holiday allowance and 8.33% end-of-year bonus.
