Pathologist – pediatric CNS and Solid Tumors

Do you want to shape the future of diagnostics in pediatric oncology? At the Princess Máxima Center, diagnostics is a driving force for clinical care, research, and innovation. Within our integrated laboratory, clinical, pathological, and molecular insights are brought together through close interdisciplinary collaboration to deliver one cohesive, high-impact diagnosis.

As a pathologist, you are at the forefront of this process – translating complex data into precision medicine, and helping accelerate progress in pediatric oncology.

Our laboratory forms a vital bridge between care and research, not only by delivering integrated diagnostics, but also by actively connecting both domains though shared expertise and innovation. All diagnostic disciplines are embedded within a single department, including cytomorphology, histology, immunohistochemistry, flow cytometry, and advanced, state-of-the-art molecular diagnostics including whole genome sequencing, whole transcriptome sequencing, and methylation profiling. New research findings are rapidly translated into routine diagnostics, ensuring that precision medicine is our standard-of-care.

Your role as pathologist
You will be responsible for the diagnostic evaluation of pediatric central nervous system (CNS) tumors and solid tumors, with a specific focus on germ cell tumors, which may occur both within and outside the CNS. If you are not yet fully experienced in these areas, you are expected to have the willingness and ambition to further develop your expertise. Your role covers the full scope of pediatric oncological pathology, including participation in on-call services. In addition, you will contribute to research, preferably within your area of focus, and take an active role in multidisciplinary meetings, education, and autopsy procedures related to a national tumor donation study.

What will you do?

  • Perform diagnostics in CNS and pediatric solid tumors
  • Participate in multidisciplinary patient discussions (tumor boards)
  • Carry out on-call service duties
  • Contribution to laboratory organization, innovation, and quality systems
  • Implementation of new (molecular) diagnostics techniques
  • Support autopsy procedures in the context of  the tumor donation study
  •  Take part in national and international panels, consultations and clinical trials

Initiate or contribute to research in line with clinical care or academic needs

You will report to the head of the laboratory and contribute across all domains of the Máxima center: care, research, and innovation. You will join  a team of seven pathologists, including one neuropathologist and two specialist in solid tumors, and collaborate closely with hemato-oncologists, medical immunologists, clinical molecular biologists, and bioinformaticians.

Who are we looking for?
A driven and innovative pathologist with a strong team spirit. You thrive in a dynamic, multidisciplinary environment and bring both precision and creativity to your work. You are willing to expend your expertise, possibly through training abroad.

What do you need to be successful?

  • Registration as a clinical pathologist (or in the final phase of training)
  • Affinity with or interest in scientific research
  • A completed or nearly completed PhD (preferred)
  • Willingness to participate in on-call duties
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • A flexible, proactive, and solution-oriented work attitude
  • A good command of the Dutch language, or the commitment to learn within a reasonable timeframe

What do we offer?
A meaningful role in an internationally leading, mission-driven center. Salary is according to the AMS collective labor agreement, depending on experience and background. In addition, you receive 8.33% holiday allowance and compensation for on-call duties. This is a 0.8 FTE position (36 hours per week).
