Postdoc Computational Pathology

Are you a motivated postdoc and do you enjoy working in a diverse team? Do you want to contribute to designing a classification system for pediatric kidney tumors, which will lead to more reproducible, solid, and faster diagnostics? We would like to get in contact with you.

The project

Diagnostic pathology involves microscopic evaluation of human tissues. Increasingly, microscopic images are digitized to support the diagnostic workflow. This rapidly growing field of ‘digital pathology’ also yields ample opportunities for application of machine learning algorithms. State-of-the-art deep learning methods have recently been proven capable of supporting the diagnostic work of pathologists. We have now reached the point where such algorithms have performance comparable to experienced pathologists for specific tasks.

This specific project is a collaboration between the Princess Máxima Center for pediatric oncology and Radboudumc and revolves around artificial intelligence in the domain of pediatric kidney tumors. The main objective is to develop a system that can automatically recognize the various components of tumors or normal tissue based on microscopic images. This will enable us to classify the tumors. Your primary task is to devise smart solutions and algorithms for classifying these images or their components. The ultimate goal is to design a classification system for pediatric kidney tumors, which will lead to more reproducible, solid, and faster diagnostics. As a result, children with kidney tumors can be treated more quickly and effectively.

Profile

We are looking for a creative and enthusiastic researcher. Specific qualifications include:

  • PhD degree in a relevant field, such as artificial intelligence and computational science and preferably experience and interest in the biomedical research field.
  • A clear interest to develop image analysis algorithms within the clinical setting of a University Medical Center and research hospital.
  • Good communication skills, enjoying working in a multidisciplinary team and supervising PhD students.
  • Expertise in software development, preferably in Python.

Our job offer

You will be employed by the Princess Máxima Center for pediatric oncology, but will work daily at the Radboudumc in Nijmegen through a posting arrangement. The position is based on 36 hours a week. You will initially be appointed for the duration of two years, and collaborate with the MD-PhD student that is fully appointed in the Princess Máxima Center for Pediatric Oncology in an AI-pathology project in children with renal cancer (Supervised by Prof. dr. R.R. de Krijger, Prof. M.M. van den Heuvel-Eibrink and dr. A.M.C. Mavinkurve-Groothuis). Your gross monthly salary will depend on your experience and background, starting in scale 60 with 8,33% gross monthly salary holiday allowance and 8,33 % end-of-year bonus. The Princess Máxima Center operates according to the collective labor agreement ‘cao algemene ziekenhuizen’.

Work environment

The Computational Pathology Group, led by Prof. dr. Jeroen van der Laak, is a research group of the department of Pathology of the Radboudumc. We are part of the interdepartmental Diagnostic Image Analysis Group (DIAG). We develop, validate and deploy novel medical image analysis methods, usually based on machine learning technology and focusing on computer-aided diagnosis. Our group is among the international front runners in the field, witnessed for instance by the highly successful CAMELYON and PANDA grand challenges which we organized. We closely collaborate with clinicians and industry.

The Princess Máxima Center

The Princess Máxima Center for pediatric oncology is an integrated hospital and research institute, which integrates healthcare, research and education on pediatric cancer, in a single location in Utrecht. Our institute aims to provide the highest level of care for all children with cancer, with optimal quality of life. The center brings together the best possible care and scientific research, creating a unique interdisciplinary institute for pediatric oncology in Europe.
