The Princess Máxima Center for Pediatric Oncology is a new nationwide research hospital concentrating healthcare, research and education with regard to cancer in children and is located in Utrecht, Science Park de Uithof. The institute has the ambition to give the best treatment to children with cancer with the highest cure rate and the least side effects to (often complex) anti-cancer treatment. The center brings together the best possible care and scientific research, creating a unique interdisciplinary institute for pediatric oncology in Europe.
We are looking for an enthusiastic, highly motivated PhD student with an interest in immune therapy, hematopoietic cell transplantation, and immune monitoring.
Nierkens & Lindemans group
The overall aim of our research is to understand what factors are important for successful immune reconstitution after hematopoietic cell transplantation (HCT) and how we can stimulate the immune system to prevent graft-versus-host disease, viral reactivations and relapse.
The insight from previous research and new findings will be also implemented in immune monitoring in patients treated with novel immune therapy strategies currently exploited in patient care of the Princess Máxima Center (e.g. CAR-T and antibody therapy).
Research Project: This PhD candidate will cover this multidisciplinary field and will be the connector between clinical care and cellular research. For this largely unexplored research field, we are looking for an independent, enthusiastic, highly motivated PhD student who has interest in immune monitoring using cellular and protein assays and connects these data to clinical outcome measures in computational analyses.

Education and Skills
- Master or equivalent degree in biomedical sciences or medicine, and a clear interest in translational tumorimmunology research.
- Team player who is social, independent and a star in multidisciplinary research.
- Excellent communication and presentation skills.
- Experience in immunological assays is a pre.
- Not scared by computational modeling
We offer a PhD project in an inspiring and inter-disciplinary research environment. The total duration of the project is 4 years (full-time, 36 hours/week). You will initially be appointed for a period of 1 year, and your performance will be evaluated by a training and supervision plan. The Princess Máxima Center operates according to the collective labor agreement ‘cao algemene ziekenhuizen’. Salary according to FWG 45 increment 6 (for the 1st year, increased to FWG 45 increment 10 in case of renewal).
