PhD student for unravelling DIPG tumor cell invasive behavior – Rios Group

The Princess Máxima Center for Pediatric Oncology is a new research hospital concentrating healthcare, research and education with regard to cancer in children in a single location in Utrecht. The institute aims to provide the highest level of care for all children with cancer and has the ambition to cure all children of cancer and significantly reduce unwanted side effects. The center brings together the best possible care and scientific research, creating a unique interdisciplinary institute for pediatric oncology in Europe.

Rios’ team vision
Together, for society, by encouraging creativity, we aim to gain essential knowledge on cancer to predict treatment outcome and contribute to curative solutions with minimal health impact for patients. In addition, we commit to communicate our research to the public and engage the society into our vision.

Our research team led by Dr. Anne Rios, study the underlying mechanisms of childhood cancer and treatment-associated second malignancies via state-of-the-art-microscopy methods. Imaging presents a powerful tool by visualizing individual cells and cellular processes in great detail. However, it remains very challenging to obtain this detailed cellular information for entire tumors and surrounding tissue, which will be key for improving our understanding of cancer progression. To fulfill this need, we have developed unique and innovative imaging strategies that can visualize individual cells and their specific behavior in an entire tissue or tumor specimen (Alieva et al., JOVE 2019, Rios et al., Cancer Cell 2019 & Dekkers et al., Nat. Protoc. 2019). By applying our imaging technologies, we hope to identify novel therapeutic targets for children with cancer. To achieve these goals, we combine mouse genetics, in vitro bioengineering and state-of the art microscopy. In our team, we value collegiality, enthusiasm, dedication, respect and reliability, which allow us to successfully reach our goals, while creating a stimulating and happy working atmosphere.

Diffuse Intrinsic Pontine Glioma (DIPG) signifies a rare and highly lethal brain malignancy in children. Part of the difficulty to treat DIPG effectively, stems from the tumor’s highly infiltrative spread. Therefore, targeting the invasive nature of DIPG represents a promising therapeutic avenue. The combination of unique imaging technologies and advanced computational analysis has the potential to vastly expand our current knowledge on tumor cell invasion and identify strategies that in the future could improve the treatment of DIPG and target cancer invasion. For this study we have recently obtained an ERC starting grant and offer an opening for a PhD student position. More information on the project can be found on:

We are asking for
A passionate, highly motivated and tenacious PhD candidate to join our lab. Experience with microscopy, mouse work and/or data analysis would be advantageous. The successful candidate should hold a master’s degree in life science or related disciplines.

Note that an open mind, ability to work independently and in collaboration with other members of the group are key.

We offer
A PhD position with a total duration of 4 years (full-time). You will initially be contracted for a period of one year, after which your performance will be evaluated and the contract may be extended for three more years. You will be working under daily supervision by an experienced senior scientist, in a very stimulating and cross-disciplinary research environment, combining cutting-edge research with state-of-the-art imaging methodology. The results of your studies will open new insights into pediatric cancer pathology and (potentially) treatment. Your gross monthly salary will depend on experience and background, starting in scale 45 with 8,33% gross monthly salary holiday allowance and 8,33 % end-of-year bonus. The Princess Máxima Center operates according to the collective labour agreement ‘cao algemene ziekenhuizen’.
