Internship research group Lugt: pediatric braintumors and immunology

Are you interested in pediatric brain tumors and immunology? Join our team to explore how immune cells interact with pilocytic astrocytomas!

Pilocytic astrocytomas are the most common brain tumors in children. Although survival is generally favorable, patients experience significant morbidity due to tumor growth or treatment-related toxicity. Recent studies have shown the abundance of myeloid cells in the tumor microenvironment. Yet, how these immune cells interact with tumor cells remains poorly understood. This project aims to investigate the crosstalk between pilocytic astrocytoma cells and myeloid cells to better understand how tumor cells may modulate immune responses and vice versa.

You will work on establishing in vitro systems using patient-derived pilocytic astrocytoma cells and myeloid cells – particularly human microglia and monocyte-derived macrophages – to assess how tumor-derived signals influence myeloid cell phenotypes and functionality. A broad set of cellular and molecular biology techniques, including flow cytometry, immunofluorescence imaging, qPCR and ELISA, will be used to analyse changes in gene and surface marker expression, secretion of cytokines and functionality of myeloid cells exposed to pilocytic astrocytoma cells or conditioned medium.

The project offers hands-on experience in a dynamic research environment and contributes to better understanding of the tumor immune microenvironment in low-grade gliomas. The results may have translational relevance for developing immunotherapeutic approaches in pediatric neuro-oncology.

Who are we looking for

We are looking for a highly motivated and curious master student who has a background in oncology, neuroscience, biomedical sciences, or a related field. Candidates with experience in cellular and molecular biology techniques are preferred. This position requires strong communication and organization skills, as well as the ability to work independently within a dynamic research group.

What we offer

We offer an internship position in a collaborative and supportive research environment, preferably for 9 months. You will be trained in a wide array of laboratory techniques and will have the opportunity to contribute to ongoing scientific publications.
