The Princess Máxima Centre for Pediatric Oncology is a new research hospital concentrating healthcare, research and education with regard to cancer in children in a single location. The institute aims to provide the highest level of care for children with cancer and has the ambition to cure all children of cancer and significantly reduce unwanted side effects. The center brings together the best possible care and scientific research, creating a unique interdisciplinary institute for pediatric oncology in Europe.
We are seeking a highly motivated, flexible and energetic research assistant to join the Heidenreich lab. The successful applicant will be an integral part of the lab’s research activities and will lead the characterisation of patient-derived xenograft samples as part of international consortium aiming to establish a robust testing platform for examining novel drugs in childhood leukaemia samples. The goal of these activities is to facilitate access to novel drugs for children with leukaemia by providing appropriate test models for drug developers. The successful candidate will coordinate sample provision and will process samples for next generation sequencing followed by data transfer for further bioinformatic analyses. The managerial activities include requesting and ordering supplies necessary for the project and excellent bookkeeping.
The Research Group
The research group led by Olaf Heidenreich is focusing on fusion genes as drivers of childhood leukaemia and targets for novel leukaemia-specific therapies. We are pursuing here a two-pronged approach with, on the one hand, developing drug delivery approaches for the direct inhibition of fusion gene expression, and, on the other, exploring the fusion gene-driven transcriptional networks for crucial “transmitters” that are amenable to pharmacologic intervention. In particular the second part includes the application of targeted and genome-wide RNAi and CRISPR screens. Extending these investigations from cell lines to primary patient material requires complex tissue culture in conjunction with advanced immunodeficient mouse models for xenotransplantation. We therefore develop novel co-culture systems for ex vivo patient cell propagation and harness our mouse models for in vivo validation experiments with the aim to improve both cure of children with leukaemia and their long-term quality of life.
Skills and Education:
You are holding BSc or MSc in a relevant biomedical subject. You have a strong desire to make a difference in the treatment of and outcome for children with cancer. You have considerable knowledge in next generation sequencing techniques; expertise in issue culture and experience with primary cell culture is a strong plus. You are able to analyse data using standard software packages such as Excel or Prism. You will collaborate with other team members and have essential social skills for goal-oriented and successful interactions. Finally, you are fluent in English and have excellent writing and presentation skills in this language.

The full-time position (1.0 FTE) is initially for one year, with the intention to extend.
Your gross monthly salary will depend on experience and background, starting in scale 45 with 8,33% gross monthly salary holiday allowance and 8,33 % end-of-year bonus. The Princess Máxima Center operates according to the collective labour agreement ‘cao algemene ziekenhuizen’.
