Nurses

At the Princess Máxima Center, pediatric oncology nurses (in training), specialists, and other healthcare professionals work together toward one mission: to cure every child with cancer, with optimal quality of life.  Pediatric oncology is a highly specialized field. That is why, as a nurse at the Máxima Center, you follow a tailored learning pathway to become a pediatric oncology nurse.

Caring together for every child with cancer

Care is organized around several specialties, including hemato-oncology and stem cell transplantation, solid tumors, and neuro-oncology. Each specialty has its own conditions and treatments, but together they form one integrated care process under one roof. Within pediatric oncology nursing, we combine knowledge and experience, always keeping the child and family at the center.

What makes working as a pediatric oncology nurse at the Máxima Center unique?

Pediatric oncology care is intensive, complex, and meaningful. It requires specialized knowledge, resilience, and commitment. At the Máxima Center, (pediatric oncology) nurses work together, allowing you to fully develop your skills and contribute to the best possible care.

The multidisciplinary team is central: (pediatric oncology) nurses collaborate closely with physicians, researchers, psychologists, and other healthcare professionals. Every link in the team is important and valued. Together, we provide care that is both medically strong and attentive, with a focus on the child and family.

(Pediatric oncology) nurses carry significant responsibility in their daily work. They provide care, are actively involved in the treatment of the child and family, and contribute to monitoring, coordination, and organization within care. There is room to grow within their expertise, share knowledge, and further improve care.

The impact of your work

As a pediatric oncology nurse at the Máxima Center, you make a difference every day. You guide children through their treatment and development, work closely with parents, and help ensure that everyday life can continue as smoothly as possible despite the illness. Your work is intensive and varied, but you know that what you do truly matters: for the child, the family, and care as a whole.

Growing, learning and developing

Pediatric oncology is a specialized field in which nurses continuously develop their skills. Our personalized learning pathway considers your talents, ambitions, and background so that your training aligns optimally with both your needs and the care required. We offer different learning pathways for nurses, pediatric nurses, and oncology nurses.

Your training to become a pediatric oncology nurse begins with a six-month preparatory period, during which you get to know the center and are prepared to start the program. Even after this, opportunities for further development remain, though they may vary depending on your situation. You can grow horizontally by deepening your expertise in patient care, education, research, or collaboration with other hospitals. Vertical development is also possible, for example towards nurse specialist, physician assistant, or team leader.
